There continues to be little to no change in the overall hot weather pattern for the next two weeks. Please continue to look after yourselves, your pets, and anyone that may be extra-sensitive to extreme heat such as children or the elderly. Highs between 107 and 109 are possible each day for the next 10 days. This heat continues to be very dangerous. We may take the #1 spot by the end of this month. We continue to climb the leaderboard for the overall hottest summer on record having recently passed 2022 for the #2 spot. We are now confident that through the first two weeks of August, this will rank as the hottest in Austin’s history. That’s the most ever recorded in Austin, and we have seven more days over 105 lined up in the forecast. After the first half of the weekend, winds should relax some, though it hopefully goes without saying at this point that the overall wildfire threat will continue in perpetuity.Ī quick summary of events so far this summer: Today will be our 50th triple-digit day of the summer so far, but more importantly, our 28th day at or above 105 degrees. The worst of our wildfire threat will continue between now and Saturday evening with winds staying breezy/gusty up to 20-30 MPH. If you are a smoker, discarding one cigarette butt could cost someone their home. It’s illegal and you’re putting lives at risk. If you’re trying to do any outdoor burning, stop. This threat is only realized IF a fire starts, so it continues to be crucial to be extremely cautious with any outdoor activities that could spark a fire. Thankfully, both of these fires and others that have developed locally are all under control this morning, but each afternoon and evening will come with the perfect weather conditions to spread new fires should they start. That has been the case the last two days with the Parmer Lane fire in Cedar Park sending an apartment building up in smoke, and another fire yesterday near Decker Lane burning through two unoccupied structures. We are now at a point where multiple fires are breaking out on a daily basis with some of those fires threatening structures. It has been a long, HOT week for everyone in Central Texas, but especially for those tasked with managing our ever-worsening wildfire conditions.
